Scott Air Force Base officially welcomes its first warrant officers from the inaugural graduating flights of the Warrant Officer Training school in 66 years, marking a historic milestone in the Air Force’s re-optimization effort.
As the service drives to meet and dominate the demands of Great Power Competition, the service believes reintroducing warrant officers is key to enhancing technical leadership in critical areas, such as cyber operations and communications.
The reintroduction of WOs is also part of a broader strategic shift to ensure a competitive edge in a rapidly changing security landscape. Scott’s first three warrant officers take on critical technical leadership roles, ensuring the base remains aligned with evolving technological demands.
Meet Scott’s Newest Warrant Officers

Scott welcomed its newest members on Jan. 14, 2025 — the first warrant officers to arrive at the base in over six decades. Their arrival signifies the Air Force’s focus on maintaining the cutting edge of advancing technology as it relates to warfare.
“It’s both a privilege and a responsibility,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2, Dennis Cracraft, Cybersecurity Test Manager, 837th Cyber Operations Squadron. “The pace at which global threats evolve requires constant vigilance and adaptability. Being part of this shift allows me to contribute to ensuring the Air Force remains agile and ready to defend against any adversary.”
The Role of Warrant Officers
Warrant officers are highly skilled technical experts who bridge the gap between enlisted personnel and commissioned officers. While commissioned officers focus on broader strategic leadership, WOs provide specialized expertise in critical areas, such as cyber operations and communications. As warfare grows more complex, so does the importance of their role. WOs will address key operational needs, maintain hard-to-replace skills, and serve as technical leaders, advisors, and risk managers, enhancing the effectiveness of their organizations.

“I think this was absolutely the right move,” said Warrant Officer Alexander Childs, Mission Element Lead, 854th Cyber Protection Team, 835th Cyberspace Operations Squadron. “It provides the most skilled members the opportunity to apply their skills in a technical leadership role, helping direct operations and solving the most complex problems we encounter. Within cyber ops and communications, it is necessary to have a group of highly skilled individuals whose purpose is to solve those problems and be dedicated to the mission..”
Integration and Leadership Development
Brig. Gen. Joy Kaczor, Cyber Operations and Warfighter Communications director hosted a series of events on Scott AFB to facilitate the smooth integration of the new warrant officers into the base. These events included the Warrant Officer Roadshow, an All-Call for Airmen in cyber-related specialties, and a Company Grade Officer Luncheon focused on leadership development in the cyber and communications fields.
