Freeport Art Museum calls on local Native American artists for BIPOC initiative

The Freeport Art Museum is calling on Native American artists within a 150-mile radius of Freeport, Illinois, to submit their work for a unique exhibition opportunity.

As part of the museum’s ongoing BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Initiative, two Native American artists will be chosen for solo exhibitions in late 2025.

“It was a good time for us to evaluate what we have been missing so far,” said Jessica Modica, the Executive Director for Freeport Art Museum

“One of the things that we had been missing is we haven’t seen really any Native American artists submit or participate in in the BIPOC initiative yet.”

The exhibitions, which will run from October 25 to December 27, 2025, are designed to showcase the voices of Native American artists and raise awareness around issues of racial justice, representation, and equity.

Artists must live within a 150-mile radius from Freeport, that includes Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee.

“It’s presenting stories and images that I don’t think we would have seen normally,” said Barry Treu, the Director of Education & Exhibitions for Freeport Art Museum.

Selected artists will have their work shown in one of the museum’s two main exhibition galleries. In addition to gaining exposure, each artist will receive a $1,000 stipend to support their participation.
